Analyzing Africa's Conflict Trends: Insights from ACLED Data (1997-2024)

I recently explored the open data provided by ACLED, a comprehensive geospatial dataset covering conflict events across Africa from 1997 to 2024. This data reveals a notable increase in conflict over the past decade, with specific spikes in violence during key periods. For instance, the year 1999 saw a surge in fatalities due to the Second Congo War, while the years 2011 to 2014 were marked by heightened violence stemming from the Libyan Civil War and Boko Haram insurgency. More recently, from 2017 to 2023, conflicts in the Sahel, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have continued to dominate, underscoring the persistent instability in these regions. (read more)
